Vic Barkin

Vic Nathan Barkin has more than 30 years of experience in the printing industry and currently owns a consulting practice specializing in digital printing business development, workflow, and technology implementation geared to the in-plant community. He also offers expertise in “Green Printing” practices and Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification facilitation, has served as a consultant for Smartwood's FSC-certification program and has audited or assessed over 70 printing facilities across the country. Barkin serves as vice president for the Mountain States Printing Education Foundation and is a contributing writer for In-Plant Graphics Magazine.

Ken Macro

Ken Macro is a professor in Cal Poly’s Graphic Communication Department, specializing in marketing, sales, lean manufacturing and production management.

Ken holds a BA from the Pennsylvania State University and an MA from the University of Akron. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in education from Walden University.

Sustaining the Inplant in a Greening World

“Going green” has become a popular phrase embedded within the vernacular of the graphic communication industry, and, most importantly, within the confines of the very organizations for which are served by in-plant print facilities. Although there has been much talk surrounding the many acronyms that make up the newly awakened world of sustainability, the question remains “where are you in the quest to become a contributor to a sustainable world?”  This one-and-a-half day workshop is the first of a three part series that addresses the how, why, and when for strategically developing a mission-critical plan for greening and sustaining the in-plant printing operation. Gone are the days when having a “green” presence consisted of using recycled paper and soy-based inks tended to keep people happy. Recent legislation in southern California has established a benchmark with regards to air emissions that will soon change the way the print industry will do business. Instead of reacting to the change, learn to become proactive and walk away from each series with a latent plan to green your operation and contribute to the sustainability initiative being directed in your parent organization. Learn of ways that can turn challenges into opportunities and sustain your existence.


Who should attend:
In-plant print managers, university and college business operations administrators, or anyone else in need a clear understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with sustainability and green printing in the future.

Day 1 (1-4pm): The Many Worlds of Green Printing
Are you confused about all of the hype surrounding sustainability and green printing? This program provides you with a comprehensive overview on all of the components surrounding the green movement and what you have to gain by becoming involved and initiating your own green plan.

You will learn:
• What is the Green Movement?
• Who are the major stakeholders?
• A view from the boardroom – Corporate Social Responsibility?
• The printers’ perspective – cost vs. benefit: How do I get my green to grow?

Day 2 (8:30am-5pm): FSC CoC Certification – A plan for change

In this session, you will gain the necessary understanding of the FSC CoC certification process. You will hear how to prepare for the FSC audit and, you will walk away with a plan to implement an FSC-based sustainability initiative for both your parent organization and your printing operation.

You will learn:
• FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Overview
• Why should I become FSC Certified?
• Costs and timelines—what is involved?
• Understanding FSC standards and terminology
• FSC CoC (Chain of Custody)  requirements
• Successful implementation strategies
• Developing and writing your DCS and PGS*
