Take time to enjoy scenic San Luis Obispo!

Farmers Market:
Every Thursday night, locals and tourists alike gather on Higuera street in downtown San Luis Obispo for Farmers Market. The street fair and produce market is known for its arts and crafts, fresh produce, delicious BBQ, and live entertainment. Six blocks of Higuera are closed-off to vehicular traffic for local merchants, restaurateurs, political and non-profit organizations to set up booths lining both sides of the street. No matter the crowd, San Luis Obispo’s Farmers Market offers a little something for everyone. Visit http://www.downtownslo.com/farmers.html for more information.

Hearst Castle:
Visit the magnificent creation of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan that’s tucked away in the rolling coastal hills of San Simeon. Located just 43 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo, Hearst Castle makes an easy day trip. The state-run historical monument offers an array of tours, each focusing on a particular area of the home. The Experience Tour is recommended for first-time visitors as it provides a broad overview of the many facets of Hearst Castle. The Visitor Center boasts a five-story National Geographic theater, gift shop, food court, William Randolph Hearst exhibit and observation deck. Visit http://www.hearstcastle.com/ for additional information.

Morro Bay:
Morro Bay is a small fishing town located just 13 miles northwest of San Luis Obispo. Morro Rock, the town’s famous landmark, rises 576 feet at the entrance of the harbor. After a drive (or walk) out to the rock, head back to the waterfront to enjoy a deliciously fresh fish dinner. The art galleries and unique shops are sure to please. Don’t miss the Morro Bay Aquarium, a non-profit rehabilitation center for distressed mammals, where you can feed recuperating sea lions that anxiously await your visit. Visit http://www.morrobay.com/MorroBayAquarium/index/Sealions.html for more information.

The Mission:
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded on September 1, 1772 by Father Junipero Serra and was the fifth of 21 missions built on the California coast. Since its founding the mission has been the focal point of the community. After Mexico won independence from Spain, it found that it could no longer afford the upkeep the missions required and the land was sold. The mission eventually fell into ruin and the remaining priests rented out rooms to help support it. During this time (1872), the mission served as the first courthouse and jail in San Luis Obispo county; however, it wasn’t until 1933 that real restoration began. Today, the beautifully restored mission is still the center of the busy downtown area and serves as a parish church for the citizens of San Luis Obispo. Visit http://www.missionsanluisobispo.org/ for more information.

The PAC:
The Christopher Cohen Center is a state-of-the-art performing arts center located at the heart of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. The Performing Arts Center (PAC) dream was realized in September of 1996 when the facility opened to the San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly communities. The facility features a 1,282-seat concert hall and 170-seat multi-purpose pavilion. Regular performances are held in the Christopher Cohen Center, Cal Poly Theater and in the Center’s rehearsal pavilion. Visit http://www.pacslo.org/index.html for a schedule of upcoming performances.

Wine Tours:
San Luis Obispo is surrounded by some of the finest vineyards in California. The mild, Mediterranean climate of the Central Coast is ideal for cultivating wine grapes. Many of the local wineries offer grounds tours and wine tasting. Experience some of the very best that the California Central Coast has to offer.
