Newly Appointed Public Printer of the United States to Address Sustainability Conference Banquet at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- A reception and banquet featuring the Honorable Robert C. Tapella, the newly appointed Public Printer of the United States, will follow "The Business of Green Media," sustainability conference at Cal Poly on Jan.24. The banquet will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in San Luis Obispo.

Tapella, who graduated from Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department in 1991, will discuss what the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) is doing to promote sustainability. Tapella will also talk about the nation's efforts to achieve a "greener" America and what the graphic communication industry can do to help.

The nation's 25th Public Printer, Tapella was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Tapella, who now leads more than 2,200 employees at the GPO, previously served as deputy chief of staff and then chief of staff during the last five years. During that time, he was instrumental in transforming the office into a profitable 21st century digital operation.

"It is a tremendous honor to have a person of Bob Tapella's stature address our conference banquet," said Harvey Levenson, head of Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department "I've observed Bob's involvement in transforming the GPO to a more sustainable organization over the past several years, and I look forward to the advice that Bob can share with our industry to do the same."

As the chief executive officer of the GPO, Tapella's core mission is keeping America informed through expert printing, publishing and digital media services to the three branches of government. The near billion-dollar government agency produces the Official Journals of Government, including two daily and one weekly newspapers: the Congressional Record, the Federal Register and the Patent and Trademark Official Gazette.

Through a partnership with over 1,250 libraries across this country, the GPO provides permanent public access to the documents of our democracy. Because printing is no longer the primary means of communication between the government and the public, the GPO is developing a digital content system to support printing, publishing and permanent public access to authenticated electronic documents that will ensure that digital information created today by our government will be available in perpetuity.

The Cal Poly Graphic Communication Institute, supported by the Cal Poly Graphic Communication Department, will host the conference and banquet in conjunction with SustainCommWorld LLC. The conference chair is Don Carli, senior research fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Communication. Conference sponsors include Kodak, Mohawk Papers, Quebecor World, Xerox, and the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts.

Graphic Communication Institute Announces
“Ink Quality Assurance” Program (IQa)

March 20, 2006, Carlsbad, Calif. -- Speaking at the 2006 Annual Convention of the National Association of Printing Ink Manufacturers (NAPIM), Hal Hinderliter, director of the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI) announced a new laboratory testing service entitled the Ink Quality Assurance program (IQa).

Developed during two years of beta testing with a leading packaging printer, the Institute’s new IQa program is a suite of fundamentally important ink tests (performed to ASTM standards) that are intended to analyze and track the most pertinent visual and functional attributes of paste or fluid printing inks.

Commercial printing companies, folding carton manufacturers, label printers and corporate/government in-plants can all benefit from the wealth of information provided by an IQa analysis. This testing program can also track the quality of ink over time as determined through multiple tests, which can alert ink buyers to unannounced changes in formulation or performance.

Ensuring the consistent quality of manufacturing components is a basic requirement for ISO 9000 certification and is compulsory for anyone wishing to bid on print projects from ISO 9000 certified businesses – a key consideration for print manufacturers that deal with the pharmaceutical industry or the US Department of Defense. GrCI’s new IQa program can satisfy those testing requirements with an independent third-party examination performed in compliance with published industry standards.

At a reduced package price, GrCI’s Ink Quality assurance program provides crucial data on the most important attributes affecting the appearance and performance of paste and fluid inks.

GrCI’s IQa: Paste Edition testing suite provides the following services:

  • Laboratory testing for ink tack
  • Laboratory testing for hue difference
  • Laboratory testing for chroma difference
  • Laboratory testing for gloss
  • Laboratory testing for tinting strength (bleach test)
  • Laboratory NPIRI grind test
  • A detailed Laboratory Testing report

GrCI’s IQa: Fluid Edition testing suite provides the following services:

  • Laboratory testing for viscosity
  • Laboratory testing for hue difference
  • Laboratory testing for chroma difference
  • Laboratory testing for gloss
  • Laboratory testing for tinting strength (bleach test)
  • Laboratory NPIRI grind test
  • Laboratory testing for pH
  • A detailed Laboratory Testing report

Taking part in the Graphic Communication Institute’s Ink Quality Assurance program is both simple and affordable. For more information or to submit samples for testing, please contact GrCI director Hal Hinderliter at (805) 756-5170 or hhinderl@calpoly.edu.

Graphic Communication Institute Announces “ADA Compliance Certification for Signage” Program

August 2, 2005, San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI) announces a new laboratory testing initiative to certify that graphic signage created for public accommodations and commercial facilities is compliant with the finish gloss and contrast guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Many types of signage (including placards, labels, maps, pictograms, warnings and other forms of instruction) must comply with ADA regulations by mandate of the US Department of Justice Code of Regulations 28 CFR Part 36 (last amended September 2002), but the companies and organizations who must obey these regulations often find it difficult to verify compliance with all aspects of the ADA's guidelines.

To meet this need, GrCI introduces its new ADA Compliance Certification for Signage program. This lab testing initiative is intended to assist signage companies, environmental designers, architects, transit authorities, government agencies and others who need to assure signage legibility. This program consists of four key components:

  • Laboratory testing for finish gloss (a key predictor of surface glare), conducted in accordance with ADA guidelines as specified in section A4.30
  • Laboratory testing for contrast, conducted in accordance with ADA guidelines as specified in section A4.30
  • Certification of compliance for samples meeting or exceeding these guidelines (denoted by a certificate imprinted with both a description and scanned image of the signage, as well as the data compiled during testing)
  • A directory of useful information and additional resources related to ADA compliance

The Graphic Communication Institute’s ADA Compliance Certification for Signage program is based upon a successful laboratory testing project conducted for the in-house creative services design department for TriMet, the Portland metro area transit system. “We are recognized as a leader in the transit industry,” notes Drew Blevins, director of marketing for TriMet, “so when disability advocates brought to our attention issues regarding the readability of our priority seating signage, we wanted to demonstrate that we were actually exceeding the thresholds set by the ADA guidelines.”

However, finding a testing laboratory to make that determination proved more challenging than TriMet had anticipated. “We checked with architects and designers, signage and graphic shops, even paint manufacturers,” explains Blevins, “but in every case we were stymied. The answer was always ‘Well, we look at it and we get feedback on it, but nothing scientific…’ Finally, we were fortunate to make contact with the Graphic Communication Institute who helped us understand in absolute terms that our new signage designs were not meeting the ADA guidelines for finish gloss and contrast.”

Drawing upon extensive graphic arts production experience, GrCI was able to resolve TriMet’s problem by suggesting a change in coating methods that reduced surface glare without an increase in manufacturing costs. “We ultimately ended up exceeding the ADA recommendations for contrast and gloss to the delight of our internal staff and our Citizens for Accessible Transportation committee members,” says Blevins. “Working with the GrCI Testing Facility has been enormously useful.”

Taking part in the Graphic Communication Institute’s ADA Compliance Certification for Signage program is both simple and affordable. For more information or to submit samples for testing, please contact GrCI director Hal Hinderliter at (805) 756-5170 or hhinderl@calpoly.edu.

    Graphic Communication Institute Announces "SAID"
Development of new standard for display-based proofing

June 10, 2005, Rosemont, IL. -- The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI) has proposed development of a new industry standard entitled Specifications for the Application of Image Displays (SAID). Speaking at the International Prepress Association’s 2005 Technical Conference in Rosemont IL, the director of the Graphic Communication Institute made the first public announcement of this ground-breaking research effort on June 8, 2005.

The goal of the SAID project is to develop a new industry standard for evaluating computer displays, video cards and software used in the reproduction of color-accurate images (a process also known as “soft proofing”). SAID aims to provide an objective, measurable methodology to assess the performance and proper application of display-based proofing equipment and methods.

“Current methods of display certification rely upon subjective visual evaluations and imprecise data built upon a 30 year-old color measurement system that is widely regarded as inadequate,” notes Hal Hinderliter, director of the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly. “By basing the SAID standard on the latest developments in color science, we can leverage the certainty of objective color measurements to provide traceability for our computer display evaluations.”

In addition to serving the needs of the graphic arts industry, Specifications for the Application of Image Displays will be applicable to the fast-growing markets of digital video, filmmaking, medical imaging and game development. Coordinating evaluation methods across all these areas of interest will assure that printing companies and graphic designers can continue to exert influence upon the development of new display technologies.

According to Hinderliter, “Manufacturers are beginning to introduce wide-gamut displays, 10-bit video processing and other new technologies that are not supported by current proofing workflows. GrCI’s most important objective will be to create a standard that can be extended in order for improved hardware and software to be utilized; to ‘future-proof’ the practice of display-based color evaluation.”

A panel of distinguished industry experts and color scientists is being assembled to steer the course of this research project; input from the vendor community will also be encouraged through a board of industry advisers. GrCI plans to work closely with established international standards committees to facilitate the development of SAID. In particular, plans are underway to submit this research as a New Project (NP) for consideration by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

For more information on the Specifications for the Application of Image Displays project or to participate on an advisory committee, please contact GrCI director Hal Hinderliter at (805) 756-5170 or hhinderl@calpoly.edu.

PIA Southern California and GrCI Announce New Program Series

June 29, 2004, San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly (GrCI) and the Printing Industries Association of Southern California (PIASC) announce a new series of full-day educational presentations known as "GrCI Tuesdays." Presented on a monthly basis (with exceptions for August vacation and December holidays), this series of presentations will provide an opportunity for members of southern California's graphic arts community to learn about the latest topics affecting the printing and publishing industry. Presentations made during "GrCI Tuesdays" will condense the content from selected 3-day GrCI workshops into a single day of high-impact learning, delivered at PIASC's headquarters in Los Angeles.

"We don't believe that the presentations made in Los Angeles will reduce the audience for our workshops in San Luis Obispo," states Hal Hinderliter, director of the Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly. "The intent is to create interest and awareness around these important topics, after which the attendees can choose to enroll in GrCI's three day workshop. The longer GrCI workshop format provides for substantial hands-on opportunities, leveraging Cal Poly's state-of-the-art facilities and 33,000 square feet of laboratory space."

Prepress, pressroom, postpress and business issues will all have a turn in the "GrCI Tuesdays" spotlight. The program series begins Tuesday July 27, featuring "XML Publishing with QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign." Presented by GrCI director Hal Hinderliter, this lecture will highlight the growing role of XML in publishing, with demonstrations of how popular desktop applications and inexpensive utilities can covert print documents in websites and HTML email marketing campaigns. Future programs are slated to include "Selling, Marketing and Producing Digital Print" (September 21, with consultant Frank Kanonik), "Adding Mailing and Fulfillment Services" (October 19, with consultant Clint Bolte) and "Color Management Implementation" (November 16, with consultant Lou Prestia).

"Our members will benefit greatly from the expertise that the Graphic Communication Institute can bring to Los Angeles," observes Frank Ianuzzi, VP Management Services for PIASC. "Southern California is among the most active regions of the United States when it comes to printing and graphics production, so our audience needs the latest information from the most prestigious sources. GrCI is developing a tremendous curriculum, and exposing our members to those topics and presenters is a winning proposition for everyone."

Topics presented during "GrCI Tuesdays" will be immediately followed by the related three-day workshop at Cal Poly, and these topics also repeat 3 times per year as part of the GrCI workshop calendar. (See http://grci.calpoly.edu/calendar.html for a complete listing.) Attendees of the PIASC programs will also enjoy a ten percent discount off registration for the related 3-day workshop held at the GrCI Learning Center in San Luis Obispo.

GrCI Announces 2004 Workshop Schedule, Presenters Include Renowned Industry Luminaries

April 6, 2004, San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly is announcing an aggressive new schedule of workshops for summer and fall 2004, covering a variety of important prepress, pressroom, business and workflow issues. Presenters will be drawn from an impressive roster of industry luminaries, including professors from Cal Poly and RIT as well as internationally known independent consultants.

In addition to private training programs for printing companies, graphic arts vendors and associations, the GrCI's educational offerings include a wide array of three-day workshops for the public. The new summer workshop schedule kicks off May 19 and includes 17 different subjects, repeating 17 weeks later as the fall workshop schedule. (The GrCI workshop calendar is divided into spring, summer and fall schedules; there's no winter schedule in recognition of San Luis Obispo's temperate coastal climate.)

"Although tradeshow seminars can be informative, having three days to thoroughly examine one topic is a completely different experience," points out Frank Kanonik, former Xerox training specialist turned independent consultant.

"Because of the small class size, attendees will receive individual attention and get the answers they need to be successful," says Kanonik. "As an added bonus, attendees will be able to see and touch the most complete lineup of digital printing equipment assembled anywhere, short of a trade show!"

Training will come directly from the best instructors the industry has to offer: top consultants (including Clint Bolte, Sandee Cohen, Frank Kanonik, David Dodd, Brian Lawler, Lou Prestia, Patti Russotti) will be joined by seasoned professors and lecturers from Cal Poly (Lorraine Donegan, Malcolm Keif, Penny Osmond, Phil Ruggles) as well as GrCI director Hal Hinderliter, an experienced prepress consultant and prolific author. Topics will include the hottest issues facing the printing and publishing industry as well as standard production methods, and each workshop will deliver practical insights on best practices for today's marketplace.

"I am honored to be teaching at the GrCI in California," enthuses Sandee Cohen, popular author and trainer on prepress and design topics. "I am especially pleased that Hal Hinderliter has put together this program as I know he can create a world-class set of courses."

Controlling costs and maximizing your time are especially important in today's business climate, so the Graphic Communications Institute has structured its workshop schedule to be as flexible as possible. Courses are modular, with each day offered as a stand-alone program. Discounts apply as the number of days increases, and users may buy blocks of training days for even greater savings. Course customization and content development services are also available. Contact the GrCI for more information.

"Competition in the printing industry is becoming more intense," notes David Dodd, business consultant and host of the Activity Based Costing for Printers program at GrCI. "Printers are responding to this increased competition by diversifying the products and services they provide. In these circumstances, it is critical that printing company managers have a clear and accurate understanding of what drives costs and profitability in their companies."

While other venues also provide training programs for the graphic arts industry, the Graphic Communication Institute's location on California's beautiful Central Coast adds an extra dimension to every attendee's experience. Students are invited to schedule a Saturday-night stay over, then enjoy their Saturday touring San Luis Obispo on a mountain bike, surfing at Pismo Beach, wine tasting in Paso Robles, whale watching at Morro Bay or enjoying a tour of Hearst Castle.

"Silicon Valley was a driving force behind many of the early fulfillment innovations, but that ended with the dot-com bubble bursting," according to Clint Bolte, noted industry consultant on mailing and fulfillment issues. "Increasingly, general commercial printers throughout North America are picking up the fulfillment baton and continuing to move forward. Benchmarking leading practices will be discussed during my GrCI workshop on implementing fulfillment services," promises Bolte, "You don't want to miss it!"

Clint Bolte, Sandee Cohen, Frank Kanonik and David Dodd are just a few of the industry luminaries featured in GrCI's workshop offerings. The new schedule includes these information-packed, high-value 3-day courses:

    - Printing Industry Overview (May 19-21), presented by Hal Hinderliter, GrCI Director
    - Selling, Marketing & Producing Digital Print (May 26-28), presented by Frank Kanonik, consultant

GrCI Announces $10,000 Gift from Moore Wallace Corp.

March 29, 2004, San Luis Obispo, Calif. -- The Graphic Communication Institute at Cal Poly is pleased to acknowledge a substantial capital donation to the GrCI from Moore Wallace Corp. (now RR Donnelley), the fourth $10,000 grant in as many years. These funds continue a tradition begun with Wallace's participation in the 2001 capital campaign that launched the GrCI.

The $10,000 check was presented by James Kersten, executive vice president, outsourcing, for Moore Wallace Corp. to Hal Hinderliter, the new director of the GrCI and Dr. Harvey Levenson, head of Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department. Over 160 people were present at the announcement during a dinner event celebrating International Print Week at the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.

"As technology changes rapidly, the printing industry must move quickly to
respond," observed Kersten. "Our support of the Graphic Communication
Institute recognizes that adapting to change increases the need for high-quality, cost-effective educational opportunities."

The Graphic Communication Institute plans to use the gift to fund development and delivery of training programs for the printing and publishing industry. Hal Hinderliter, GrCI director, noted that Moore Wallace's contributions allow the Graphic Communication Institute to host educational workshops from leading experts in this key segment of the US economy.

"This fourth donation to the Graphic Communication Institute recognizes both the GrCI's mission to support education in the graphic arts industry as well as Moore Wallace's commitment to expand that vision into the future," Hinderliter said.

Moore Wallace’s combination with RR Donnelley was completed on February 27th, 2004. Complete information about the combined organization is available at the RR Donnelley website: http://www.rrdonnelley.com.
